Texas Lawyers Auxiliary History

On October 27, 1983, ten women from local auxiliaries across Texas met in Tyler and agreed to form a state auxiliary. During the previous year, Dallas Lawyers’ Wives’ Club, Inc., had conducted a survey of all local Bar Associations in Texas to locate and contact all existing auxiliaries to determine their interest in a statewide organization.

Ten auxiliaries responded with interest; and through the efforts of Blake Tartt, then President of the State Bar of Texas, money was made available for delegates’ expenses to Tyler. At that meeting, it was decided to form a nonprofit tax¬exempt corporation whose mission would be to support the State Bar of Texas and the Texas legal profession. TLA’s first general meeting was held July 5, 1984, at the State Bar Convention in San Antonio. Mrs. Judy Abright Troy, who had spear¬headed the organization of TLA, was elected its first president. The Auxiliary has enjoyed rapid growth.

Texas Lawyers Auxiliary is an exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, which will render contributions to TLA deductible under Section 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code.
